Schema markup is code you add to your pages that tells machines what your content means. A human reading “Stelix Media, Kota Damansara, +60 11-3680 6823” understands it is a business, a location and a phone number. A machine sees a string of characters. Schema removes the guesswork — and with AI assistants now answering questions directly, removing that guesswork has become considerably more valuable.
There are hundreds of schema types. Most Malaysian SMEs need five.
1. Organization
This establishes that your business exists as a distinct entity, with a name, a logo, contact details and verified profiles elsewhere on the web. The most commonly missed property is sameAs — the list of your other official profiles: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, your Google Business Profile.
Without sameAs, a machine has no way to connect your website to your LinkedIn page or your Google listing. With it, all those sources reinforce a single identity. This is one of the cheapest credibility signals available and one of the most frequently left half-finished.
2. LocalBusiness
If you serve customers from a physical location or within a defined area, LocalBusiness schema carries your address, opening hours, service area and geographic coordinates. For Malaysian businesses competing on locality — “SEO agency Petaling Jaya”, “aircon service Johor Bahru” — this is directly relevant to how AI assistants decide which businesses to name for a location-specific question.
Your address here must match your Google Business Profile exactly. Different formats of the same address read as two different places.
3. Service
Most business websites describe their services in prose and stop there. Service schema states, in machine-readable form, that this page describes a specific service, provided by a specific organisation, in a specific area, to a specific type of customer.
This matters because AI assistants answering “who does X in Malaysia” are trying to match a service to a provider. A page that declares itself a Service with a named provider and an area served is doing that matching work for them.
4. FAQPage
FAQPage schema is the closest thing to a direct line into AI answers, because its structure — question, then answer — is exactly the shape an assistant is looking for.
One rule matters above all others: the questions and answers must be visible on the page. Adding FAQ schema for content that users cannot see is against Google’s structured data policies and can earn a manual penalty. Write the FAQ, publish it visibly, then mark it up. Never the reverse.
Build the questions from what customers genuinely ask — the questions that come up on every sales call. Those are the questions being typed into AI assistants too.
5. BreadcrumbList
Breadcrumbs describe where a page sits in your site’s structure. This is the least glamorous item on the list and the easiest to implement, because most SEO plugins generate it automatically. It helps both search engines and AI assistants understand how your content is organised, and it improves how your pages appear in results.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
- Wrong entity types. Many SEO plugins mark every page as an Article by default. A service page declaring itself a news article actively misinforms machines about what your business does. This is extremely common and worth checking.
- Duplicate or conflicting markup. Two plugins both generating Organization schema produces contradictory signals. One source of truth per entity.
- Schema that contradicts the visible page. If your markup claims a service you no longer offer, or an address you have moved from, you are actively degrading your own credibility.
- Marking up and never checking. Structured data breaks silently — a plugin update, a theme change, a migration. It is worth re-validating periodically rather than assuming it still works.
How to check what you have
Google’s Rich Results Test and Schema.org’s validator will both read a live URL and show you what structured data is present. Run your homepage, one service page and one other page. If you see nothing, or you see everything typed as Article, there is straightforward work available.
