Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini — can read it, understand it, and cite it when they answer someone’s question. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes to be the source the AI quotes.
For Malaysian businesses, this matters more than it might appear. A growing share of buyers now start with a question typed into an AI assistant rather than a search box. The assistant answers directly, names a handful of sources, and the user often never sees a results page at all. If your business is not among the sources, you were never in the conversation.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO and AEO overlap, but they optimise for different outcomes.
- SEO aims for a ranking position. Success is being in the top few results for a keyword.
- AEO aims for a citation. Success is being the source an AI names when it answers a question.
The practical consequences differ too. SEO rewards keyword coverage and backlinks. AEO rewards clear, self-contained answers, machine-readable structured data, and — critically — simply being readable by AI crawlers in the first place.
The four layers of AEO
1. Crawler access
This is the layer most businesses fail without knowing. AI assistants read the web using named crawlers: GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, ClaudeBot for Claude, Google-Extended for Gemini. If your server, CDN or robots.txt blocks these, no amount of content work will get you cited.
This is not a rare misconfiguration. Cloudflare changed its defaults to block AI crawlers, which means a large number of sites were opted out automatically, without anyone making a decision. We regularly audit Malaysian business websites that return a 403 error to every AI crawler while their owners wonder why they never appear in AI answers.
2. Structured data
Schema markup — JSON-LD embedded in your pages — tells machines what your business is, what you sell, where you operate and what questions you answer. An AI assistant reading a page with proper Organization, Service, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema has an unambiguous picture. Without it, the assistant is guessing from prose.
3. Answer-shaped content
AI assistants quote passages, not pages. Content that leads with a direct, complete answer in the first forty to sixty words is far more quotable than content that builds to its point over several paragraphs. Pages structured around real customer questions — with the answer immediately beneath each question — consistently outperform marketing prose.
4. Off-site corroboration
AI models weigh agreement across sources heavily. A claim that appears only on your own website is weaker than the same claim corroborated by a business directory, an industry association listing, a Google Business Profile and a LinkedIn page that all say the same thing. Consistency of your name, address and phone number across the web is not a small detail — it is how a model decides your business is a real, single, identifiable entity.
What AEO is not
AEO is not a replacement for SEO. Google’s AI Overviews are built on the same index that powers ordinary search, so classic SEO fundamentals still drive a large part of AI visibility. Nor is AEO a trick. There is no way to make an AI cite a page that does not genuinely answer the question — the models are specifically trained to resist that.
It is also not something you do once. AI answers are regenerated continuously, and the set of cited sources shifts. AEO is closer to a maintained position than a completed project.
Where to start
In order of impact for most Malaysian SMEs:
- Check whether AI crawlers can reach your site at all. This takes minutes and is the single highest-value check available. If you are blocked, nothing else matters.
- Add structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage at minimum.
- Rewrite your key service pages to lead with answers, and add genuine FAQ sections built from questions customers actually ask.
- Fix your off-site presence — Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, all with identical business details.
- Measure citations, not rankings. Track how often AI assistants name you for the questions your buyers ask.
If you would like to know where your own site stands, get in touch — we run an AEO readiness audit that covers crawler access, structured data and answer readiness, and tells you plainly what is working and what is not.
